CGS Parent Volunteer Job Descriptions

LI , LII, & LIII HELPERS – Where: In the Level I, Level II, & Level III Atria with the catechists
What: 1.) Record presentations catechists are giving children & also the works the children take off the shelves. 2.) Intercept children when they disturb a catechist who is already working with another child. 3.) In general, help maintain the quiet, respectful, meditative environment of the atrium. (Please refer to the helper handouts sent out, or contact Mary Ellen to have them sent to you.) 3.) Optional: present or re-present practical life presentations and/or review basic atrium etiquette with children. (Ex: how to walk in the atrium, how to talk in the atrium, how to get an adult’s attention, how to carry a tray, etc.)
Who: The catechists are always available to help with names of children and names of the materials they are working with.
How: There are “Progress Cards” in each atria that are used to record # 1.) above. The helper handouts review how we do and do not direct and correct children in the atria.
When: About once a month during atrium, 4pm – 5:30pm. Helpers are needed each week for Level I and Level II. Most helpers will be assigned to be an atrium helper only about once a month.
HALL MONITOR – Where: In the large room outside the atria rooms
What: Accompany child to restroom when they leave the atrium. (Do not enter the bathroom. Simply stay by the door so that you can hear and make sure they flush, and wash their hands.) Accompany them back to their atrium.
When: About once a month during atrium, 4pm – 5:30pm. Two hall monitors are needed each week. Most hall monitors will be assigned once a month or less.
RESTORE ATRIUM – Where: Level I, Level II & Level III Atria
What: Restore and resupply atrium materials. Tuesdays: Levels I & II. Wednesdays & Thursdays: Levels I, II & III.
How: A detailed list will be available that will list what needs to be done, how, and where the supplies are.
When: Wednesday restorer: Between 5:30pm Tuesday and 1pm Wednesday
Thursday restorer: Between 5:30pm Wednesday and 1pm Thursday
Helpers will be scheduled about once a month or less often. It takes approximately an hour to restore the atria. It can be completed any time before the next session:
Restoring the atria can be done after that day’s session, but it will take the better part of an hour. You may find that completing this job is done more easily the next morning, but it is up to you!
CHILDCARE – Where: Knights of Columbus Hall on Main Street, next to Main Street Deli
What & Who: Help watch the children of catechists and helpers during weekly CGS sessions. Typically, there are only one to four children to watch.
When: Childcare helpers will be assigned about once a month, to watch children during Thursday’s CGS sessions. Childcare helpers can drop their children off early at the Oustalet Center so that they can be at the KC Hall by 3:45, and will stay until all the children are picked up, usually by 5:40pm.
WASHING & IRONING – Where: At your home
What: On Thursdays, take home the atrium washcloths, handkerchiefs & sometimes aprons to wash and iron, then return by 4pm Tuesday of the next week.
How: Instructions will be given on how the handkerchiefs are to be ironed.
When: Done at home anytime between Thursday after atrium and Monday afternoon. Each helper will be assigned to wash & iron about every month and a half.
PLANT CARE – Where: At the Oustalet Center
What: Care for the atria plants: 1.) Make sure they are watered weekly, or as they need. 2.) Exchange inside for outside plants as needed. 3.) Fertilize plants as needed. 4.) Repot plants as needed. (Potting soil and pots are available.)
How: Potting soil and pots are available when plants outgrow their containers. There are several plants in each atrium that the children take care of, and we have additional plants outside. Every few weeks, inside & outside plants can be exchanged as they seem to need. Plants can be fertilized monthly with a fertilizer we have that is added to water. Children don’t always water all the plants, water them adequately or sometimes overwater them, so they need weekly care.
When: Plant care helpers are assigned for two weeks to check on plants once each week. Fridays or Saturdays is recommended since that is immediately after atrium days, but the plants can be seen about anytime during the week.
ATRIUM CLEANING – Where: In the Level I, Level II & Level III Atria
What: 1.) Restore and resupply atrium materials. 2.) Wash & restore glass materials that have been used during the week. 3.) Vacuum, sweep & dust.
How: All cleaning supplies, vacuum, etc. are available at the Oustalet Center. A detailed list will be available that will list what needs to be done, how, and where the supplies are.
When: It can be completed any time between 5:30pm Thursday and 1pm Tuesday. Helpers will be scheduled once every month and a half. Cleaning & restoring will take approximately an hour to 1 ½ hours for two helpers. The two helpers assigned each week will need to coordinate to be here at a time convenient for both.
